Coronavirus: Europe officially rolls out COVID-19 vaccinations in effort to combat pandemic

Europe officially launched its massive COVID-19 vaccination drive on Sunday with pensioners and medics among the first to get their shots.

In Germany, 101-year-old Gertrud Haase was happy to be one of the first to be vaccinated in Berlin, while in Greece, nurse Efstathia Kampisiouli was the first to receive the jab in the country. Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis also received his vaccine, saying he wanted to send the message that it was safe and effective.

A former French domestic worker, who said her name was Mauricette, said she was moved to receive the first vaccination in the country, while elderly care home residents in Dijon, France, also received their own shots.

Numerous other countries in the European Union received vaccines on Sunday as part of the cross-border campaign, including Italy, Spain and Portugal.
